Students and New Graduates

Top 10 Reasons New Grads Join The MathWorks

It's easy to see that the company cares about us. They want us to be happy with our work and comfortable in our environment. From the small, everyday perks to the large celebrations, I feel valued. I'm still amazed that the company celebrated its 15-year anniversary by taking us all to the Bahamas.

My work sharpens my skills and deepens my knowledge every day.

This has really boosted my confidence. It's great to know that customers think of me as a “knowledge base” with the technical skill to help them get their work done.

I have colleagues who are experts in their fields, and I can talk to any of them, anytime, from the latest new hire to the chief scientist.

I am surprised how much I can learn and how many places I can go with my degree. I haven't decided exactly what I want to do, and this job gives me a chance to try everything for a little while before making a commitment. The way things are set up, I can go anywhere from here.

I never felt like the new kid on the block. The Engineering Development Group (EDG) made me feel welcome right from the very first day. People always came by to see how I was doing, and I was trained by recent graduates who knew what it was like to start your first job.

When I was little, I sometimes used to go to work with my dad. I remember that everyone wore suits to work and pretty much kept their doors closed. Well, it's the exact opposite here! People have toys in their offices and music playing. Groups chat in the hallways and have lunch together. People even get together after work for all kinds of activities, from sports to camping trips. It's fun to work in an atmosphere like this every day.

You don't have to know everything right from the start. People here will help you learn, as long as you have the motivation.

As an entry-level engineer at The MathWorks, I've gained exposure to many different areas of engineering, and I enjoy the variety of my work. One day I might help a customer who's designing a roller-coaster at Disney World. Another day I might assist an engineer who's running an entire steel mill on MathWorks products-or I might teach MATLAB to top-secret security agents who will not say what they are doing with MATLAB!

The company does a great deal to support the community, from funding college scholarships for local high school students to matching employee pledges for charity events, such as the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge. This kind of social commitment is really important to me.
