The ASEE Honors The MathWorks with an Award for Excellence in Engineering Education Collaboration
The MathWorks Is Recognized for Its Support of the EcoCAR Challenge Student Competition and Commitment to Advancing Engineering Education
NATICK, Mass. - (19 Mar 2009)
The MathWorks received the 2009 Excellence in Engineering Education Collaboration Award from the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) for its support of the EcoCAR Challenge student competition. This award, issued by the ASEE Corporate Member Council, recognizes companies that demonstrate best practices in their collaborative efforts with academic institutions to enhance engineering education and engage students in engineering.
Committed to advancing education in engineering, science, and math, The MathWorks is a major sponsor of EcoCAR Challenge, donating software, delivering training, and providing mentors who work closely with student teams throughout the three-year competition. EcoCAR Challenge gives engineering students the opportunity to design and build vehicles with a reduced environmental impact by using leading-edge automotive technologies. Competing teams from 17 universities across North America re-engineer a GM Saturn Vue to achieve improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, while retaining the vehicle’s performance, safety, and consumer appeal.
By investing in EcoCAR Challenge teams of students and faculty, The MathWorks is helping to educate and develop the next generation of engineers. Over the course of the competition, students learn real-world engineering skills in a team environment that mirrors the workplace, making them highly effective and qualified to pursue engineering professions in the automotive industry. Faculty also benefit: by working closely with industry leaders, they can better understand what skills their students need to develop, and create more career-relevant curricula.
