References on Matlab Banded Linear Solver

Hi,
I have been using Matlab for solving large sparse banded matrices which by the way is very efficient.
I understand that the solver used is the banded linear solver but it seems a bit difficult to find out further information on the algorithm. What type of algorithm is it based on? Is there any publications related to the Algorithm you could refer me to?
