Benchmark WiCOMM-T is a wireless digital communication system with a pluggable 70 MHz IF or 2.4 GHz RF module. The system has a transmitter and a receiver and provides loop-back options at baseband and 70 MHz IF. Using the PC's USB port, it has an interface to MATLAB®, which provides maximum flexibility in learning complete digital communication concepts such as digital modulation techniques, baseband equalization, filtering concepts, and the basics of CDMA, GSM, and OFDM. The MATLAB interface to the platform also allows users to try out other topics—such as software defined radio, FM radio reception, turbo and LDPC channel coder/decoder, V.32 modem, frequency hopping spread spectrum, and discrete multitone modem—on their own. The system also enables users to learn concepts such as clock slip and control and timing acquisition. Users can write algorithms for digital communication concepts in MATLAB and validate their code using WiCOMM-T.
With the 2.4 GHz RF plug-in module, users can study the real-time problems encountered in RF communication and learn how to mitigate them by writing their own code in MATLAB. WiCOMM-T includes reference MATLAB source code for all suggested experiment topics, which users can modify to generate different modem samples and analyze the received modem samples using different algorithms.
The transmitter and receiver code for experiment topics including QPSK modulation/demodulation, adaptive equalization techniques, and OFDM is written in MATLAB. When the transmitter code is executed, modem samples are created. These modem samples are transmitted and received through the system. The received modem samples are analyzed using the receiver code written in MATLAB. With the built-in MATLAB GUI, users can run the sample experiments and vary the parameters for the experiment. The graphical interface also lets users to add their own experiments.
